July 2020 – Hartog Hutton is delighted to announce that our St Leonard’s development has been honoured with a prestigious architectural award by The Sudbury Society.
The Alan Philips Architectural Awards were established to recognise outstanding contributions to the built environment, through conservation and restoration.
“Most striking is the careful refurbishing of the main hospital building at the development’s heart – all the original features and main window openings have been retained, and meticulous care has been taken to steam clean original brickwork and repoint with a high degree of craftsmanship rarely found in modern developments.” Commented the judges.
In the middle ages, this Sudbury location was home to a leper hospital, and continued to house the sick for centuries to follow. In 2015 the NHS closed its doors and the buildings were left to fall into disrepair.
The old St Leonard’s plot comprised a collection of modern yet dilapidated buildings, surrounding a beautiful Victorian building, that had been neglected for many years.

The old St Leonard’s plot comprised a collection of modern yet dilapidated buildings, surrounding a beautiful Victorian building, that had been neglected for many years.
Work began with demolishing the more recent hospital extensions, to allow the original building to stand out. We were careful to retain and repair all the external architectural features which gave this building its identity, while refurbishing it to the highest standards for its new life as a residential building.
The nine homes surrounding the old hospital were sympathetically designed to blend in with the overall feel of the scheme, using traditional external finishes of mainly brick and slate.
We had to work carefully around several wonderful mature trees which benefitted from Tree Protection Orders. These trees now sit well amongst the new houses and help to soften the appearance of the new scheme.
“This was a really special project for us, and we worked hard on the design,” said Malcolm Payne, Director at Hartog Hutton. “We’re delighted with the result and hope to have given the wonderful old building another century of life.”
